The enormous level of big data which only keeps increasing at an alarming rate has become a major concern around the world. But ever wondered how does this data impact a business when it’s transitioning to the cloud? Also, did you ever question yourself if it is even possible to enrich data generated in the cloud by using reference data from on-premise?

Well, Microsoft has come up with the perfect answer to these questions with its innovative platform named Azure Data Factory.

What is Azure Data Factory?

Azure Data Factory can be interpreted as a cloud-based data integration service that lets its users create their own data-driven workflows in the cloud for orchestrating and automating data movement and data transformation. Azure Data Factory is also well flexible to monitor and manage workflows using both programmatic and UI mechanisms.

Functioning Of Data Factory-

The Data Factory will permit users to create multiple data pipelines that move and transform data. Also, these pipelines can be scheduled to move accordingly in fixed time duration (hourly, daily, weekly, etc.)

The functioning of pipelines in the Data Factory can be explained in the following steps

Connect and Collect:-

First, we should begin the process by connecting all the essential sources of data and processing such as SaaS services, file shares, FTP, and web services. Then, by using Copy Activity command the data can be moved to the centralized location for subsequent processing for further analysis.

Transform & Enrich-

Upon presenting the data int eh centralized location in the cloud, it can be then transformed using compute services such as HDInsight Hadoop, Spark, Data Lake Analytics, and Machine Learning.

Publish-

Once the data is transformed it is to be transformed from the cloud to on-premise sources like SQL Server or keep it in your cloud storage sources for consumption by BI and analytics tools and other applications.
